Welcome to Green Mountain Down, where the spirit of the 80s meets modern outdoor vibes! Get ready to gear up for adventure with us—let's make new memories and keep the outdoor spirit alive!
Hi, I’m Patty Monteverde Rooney – the founder and maker behind Green Mountain Down. “Monteverde” means Green Mountain in Italian and French, which felt like the perfect name for my brand. I added “Down” because every vest I make is filled with premium goose down for natural warmth and comfort.
I started making these vests back in the 1970s while living in Utah, inspired by the mountain lifestyle and the need for outerwear that was both warm and built to last. When I moved back to Pittsburgh, I continued manufacturing and selling my vests throughout the tri-state area. You could find them in ski shops, sporting goods stores, specialty clothing shops, and also sold directly to customers.
In the mid-1980s, I stopped production to focus on other ventures — but the love for making these vests never went away. After retiring a few years ago, I decided to start making them again — and I’m so glad I did!
Today, every Green Mountain Down vest is handmade entirely by me. I cut the patterns, sew the pieces together, fill each vest with down, finish the details, and snap every closure myself. I sell directly to individuals and showcase my work at regional trade shows, continuing the tradition with the same hands-on care as when I started.
What makes Green Mountain Down truly special is its longevity. Many original vests from the 1970s are still in use today — now being worn by the third generation of families.
That legacy speaks to the durability built into every piece:
-
Premium goose down insulation
-
Double-stitched seams for durability
-
Machine washable and dryable construction
-
Timeless, heirloom-quality craftsmanship
Green Mountain Down vests are made with care, built for comfort, and designed to last for years to come! Enjoy the warmth, comfort, and tradition of Green Mountain Down. Thanks so much for being part of the Green Mountain Down story — and enjoy :)
